Assess Yourself
Assess yourself for possible problems with alcohol or drugs. There is no definite quick test to tell if you have an alcohol or drug problem, but there are some good ways to assess the risk. The four questions below make up a screening tool called the CAGE-AID. Please answer the questions honestly and use your score to determine if you are at risk for an alcohol or drug problem.
CAGE-AID
In the past year:
C Have your every felt that you should cut down on your drinking or drug use?
A Have people annoyed you by criticizing your drinking or drug use?
G Have you ever felt bad or guilty about your drinking or drug use?
E Have you ever had a drink or used a drug first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover? (Eye-opener)
Score one (1) for each yes answer.
If you answered “Yes” to one question, you could be at risk for a problem. If you answered “Yes” to two or more, you should seek a professional opinion about your alcohol or drug use.
The National Institute for Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) also has a quick way to assess your risk level. Again, answer the questions honestly and score your answers.
